ATHLETICS DEPARTMENT MISSION STATEMENT
The St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute Athletic Department is committed to academic and athletic excellence by developing future leaders for life after high school through competition and accountability. We will provide an educational experience committed to the highest academic, athletic, and ethical standards.
ROLE OF THE STUDENT ATHLETE
Student athletes at St. Joe’s are expected to make a commitment to a tradition of excellence bigger than any one individual. You will be held to the highest of standards academically, athletically, and socially. You are part of a unique group that includes generations of successful student athletes. You are expected to accept the responsibility of positively representing St. Joe’s and all of our alumni both on and off the field.
ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT PHILOSOPHY / POLICY ON MULTI-SPORT ATHLETES
The St. Joe's athletic department believes and supports the whole student approach to education. This especially includes supporting multi-sport athletes as well as athletes being involved in other school activities. Through the evolution of athletics the idea of an "off season" no longer truly exists. Being too restrictive will result in players quitting multiple sports to focus on just one specific sport and being too flexible will result in a lack of commitment to a specific sport / season. Because of this reality our official position as a department is listed below:
IN-SEASON EXPECTATIONS
Players are expected to commit to their team and not miss any athletically related activities unless communicated and approved in advance by the coach. Coaches reserve the right to assign necessary and consistent disciplinary actions for players missing these activities. Coaches can also decide on the status of a player (makes a team or cut) based on their availability but not on what activities they participate in outside of their in-season schedule.
OFF SEASON EXPECTATIONS
Student athletes are permitted to be involved in off season activities but need to be clearly communicated as voluntary. Attendance cannot be taken and disciplinary action or status within the team cannot be impacted. Missing an in-season athletically related activity to attend an out of season activity is not permitted (unless communicated in advance with both coaches). We strongly encourage student athletes not currently participating in a sport to be involved in the off season strength & conditioning training program.
NOTES
At some point in time young men are going to have to make difficult decisions but it’s not the role of the SJCI athletic department or it’s staff to be involved in adding additional pressure to this process. Student athletes should never be put into a situation where they are being forced or persuaded to decide between sports or activities. Numbers don't lie and the success of our department and each individual sport is contingent on giving our talented multi-sport athletes the ability to develop and be involved in multiple activities. The SJCI athletic departmet is committed to providing the best overall experience to our student athletes and will always exercise mutual respect between sports and proactive communication with staff members
